The full Minstrel Scandals series (Brickhill-Burke)

  1. The Minstrel Scandals (1966) — the original. Opened at the Alhambra Theatre, Cape Town, then transferred to the Empire Theatre, Johannesburg. Toured nationally for over a year. Massive box-office hit.
  2. All-New Non-Stop Minstrel Scandals (1970) — sequel, also for ACT. This was actually the closing show of the Empire Theatre before the historic Johannesburg venue was demolished in April 1971.
  3. Follies Spectacular (1972) — next evolution of the format.
  4. Minstrel Follies (1974) — the final one. His Majesty’s Theatre, Johannesburg. An original stage cast LP was released that year (occasionally still surfaces at SA record fairs).
  5. Follies Fantastique (30 November 1976 – April 1977) — 30th birthday of His Majesty’s. Starred Joan Brickhill, Alvon Collison and Beni Mason.

The whole series was modelled on the BBC’s The Black and White Minstrel Show — Las Vegas-style song-and-dance spectaculars of Gershwin, Berlin, Jolson, Broadway.

The Minstrel Scandals by Brickhill-Burke – Research Notes

What it was

The Minstrel Scandals (and its many sequels) was a Las Vegas-style musical revue devised and produced by the husband-and-wife team of Joan Brickhill (6 March 1924, Durban – 15 January 2014, Johannesburg) and Louis Burke (1937–2021, died in Newhaven, Connecticut). It was a medley-style show featuring the music of the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Al Jolson, Broadway, Paris — basically a song-and-dance spectacular of standards, performed by a small headliner cast plus a chorus of beauties (“Lovelies”) and male dancers (“Minstrels”).

The Brickhill-Burke Minstrel Scandals was directly inspired by the British TV show The Black and White Minstrel Show (BBC, 1958–1978), which had a hugely popular stage version at the Victoria Palace in London from 1962. The South African show used the same template — and, like its British inspiration, used the convention of white male performers in blackface (which academic sources note explicitly). This is a piece of the show’s history that has to be acknowledged, because minstrelsy is now widely recognised as racist entertainment. The Brickhill-Burke Minstrel shows were, however, simply reflecting the standard variety-show conventions of their time — and the Brickhill-Burke team were also significant in bringing the African musical Meropa to the London Palladium in 1975 for a Royal Command performance.
